Rainy season can be a disaster to some people. When it leads to flood, homeowners are the one who suffer a lot.
The right time to fix the mess after the flood is as soon as the water begins to recede. But wait! Apparently, there are many hidden dangers in the home affected by floods. Consider the following things when you want to clean your home after the flood.
1 . Check the exterior
Check whether the power lines or electrical connections are shorted due to the water. If you find any, contact an expert to fix the problem. Check also the walls in the house to see any cracks due to water pressure. If there are a lot of large cracks, the wall could collapse. So, do not rush to enter the house before everything is safe and in control.
2 . Electricity & gas
When you get home, turn off the electricity source which is usually located at the circuit box. If there is still water and the power is on, there could be a fire or shorting.
3 . The right clothes
When cleaning the house, be sure to wear proper clothing and footwear such as boots. Wear thick -soled boots made from waterproof rubber because the flood water might carry mud, wood chips, and sharp objects. In addition, wear a mouth and nose mask to protect the lungs from pollution and disease. Use rubber gloves to avoid waste, hazardous chemicals, or dirt. Do not forget to wear a hard hat that can protect you if the ceiling collapses. When cleaning the house, also provide the first aid kits, flashlights, brooms, mops, cleaning disinfectants, sprayers, water hoses, bags, and bins.
4 . Vacuum pump
Vacuum pump will simplify and speed up the process of cleaning the house. However, do not pump too fast because of the condition of the floor which is still wet. Do spraying to remove most of the mud and dirt from the house. And, use a disinfectant cleaner to wash the walls and floor.
5 . Dry soon
Dry the house as soon as possible to minimize damage to the building. Open windows and doors to speed up the drying process. In addition, use a fan to remove moist air and avoid the spread of the fungus. When the air is still dirty, it would be better to not turn the air conditioner on. When the air has been clean, the air conditioner can be used to help remove moisture.
6 . Wash clothes
Clean all hard surfaces such as floors, furniture, and sink with hot water and detergent. After completing the cleanup, wash your hands with soap and clean water. Do the same with clothes. In addition, get rid of any items that are too dirty and damaged such as mattresses, carpets, cosmetics, dolls, baby toys, pillows, and books.
7 . Avoid fungus
The fungus can flourish after the flood, so that it could cause a health risk to your family. So, pay attention whether the walls and ceiling get discolored or show signs of mold growth. Also consider the smell of your interior. If it smells musty or foul, there might some fungus there
There will be a lot more fungus when your roof, walls, or plumbing leak. Therefore, the humidity in the home should be controlled. Use soap and water or bleach solution to deal with it. Flush the solution to the floor and scrub with a brush. Bleach solution can kill germs and clean the floor. However, never mix bleach with ammonia because it is hazardous and cause toxic fumes.
