When designing or decorating a house/apartment some people usually refer to Feng Shui. Then, is there are relation between paint colors and Feng Shui? What color should I choose to decorate my bedroom, dining room, living room, and workroom?

Feng Shui uses the principles of Eastern/Chinese philosophy which searches for a balance of energy flow in a house. It is aimed at balancing Yin and Yang and Chi ideology. Feng Shui is based on the balance of earth’s five elements; wood, metal, fire, water, and earth. Those five elements should be in a balance. Colors become an important aspect in our environment. Colors create a vibration and strengthen energy. Use colors as needed to create a beautiful and peaceful decoration.

When choosing paint colors for your home, you should consider the outdoor environment too. Outdoor lighting effects how the paint color will look and also reflect the atmosphere inside the house. In the area with abundant sunshine, brown and orange colors are quite popular. Bright yellow, blue, or red also looks fascinating in the bright sunshine just like the Mediterranean style. Intense colors will look gorgeous for any color with a lot of sunshine. Yet, it will be weird when the sunshine is not intense such as in the area with a cold climate. Walls and floors with dark color pigments can absorb or soak up the rays. In contrast, the bright colors can reflect the lights and create a brighter effect as well.

The following are some principles in using wall paint colors and on where to apply. Every color has a different negative and positive quality. What is presented here is only a guide based on Feng Shui principles. You should choose the colors wisely so strengthen the emotional effects in each color.

Red stimulates a dominant atmosphere. Red will make an object look bigger and a room look smaller. It is a good color to create an accent. This color would be great to be applied in the living room, kids’ room, kitchen, or workroom.

Pink is associated with innocence, purity, and romantic atmosphere. It is good to be applied in the bedroom, yet will not fit the bathroom or kitchen.

Purple is an impressive and spiritual color. This color can be applied in the bedroom or medication room. It is not suitable for the kitchen or bathroom.

Blue symbolizes spirituality, peacefulness, mystery, patience, and contemplation. It is suitable for bedroom, therapy room, and medication room. In contrast, it is not suitable for dining room or workroom.

Green is a symbol of growth, fertility, and harmony. This color is refreshing and calming. It is appropriate for bathroom, therapy room, and conservatory. Green is not supposed to be applied in family room, play room, or study room.

Yellow symbolizes epiphany. This color stimulates the mind. It is good to be applied at the corridor and kitchen. Don’t apply it in the bathroom and medication room.

Orange is a color of happiness and encourages communication. It can be applied in the bedroom, dining room, and corridor. It is not appropriate for bedroom and other small spaces

Brown is related to stability and elegance. It is great to be applied in the study room. Don’t use it for the bedroom.

Black symbolizes independence and is mysterious. This color is often used in teenagers’ room. It is not appropriate for kids’ room.
