We can divide walls into two types; bearing walls and partition walls. Bearing walls are the one which is permanent and becomes part of the supporting structure of the building. Partition walls can be permanent but can also be non permanent such as room divider. Both bearing walls and partition walls can be made from various materials with their own advantages and disadvantages. The common wall materials used for homes are:
1 . Red brick
Red brick is made from clay and burned in a high temperature. Red brick walls are built by arranging bonded bricks with mortar. This wall can be covered with plaster or can be left unfinished to expose the brick color and texture. Red brick walls are relatively leak proof. The walls are also strong and durable. However, the red brick wall construction takes a long time so the cost is relatively expensive.
2 . White concrete brick
White brick is made of a mixture of minerals that contain silica, limestone, and water that are pressed without being burned, resulting in boxes with holes on the surface. The construction is considered quick, but because it is made of lime which is a brittle material and absorbs water, white brick walls are prone to cracking and moisture. It is called white concrete brick because it is made of white limestone.
3 . Cement brick
Similar to white brick, cement brick is also pressed without burned. The difference is that it is made of cement. Cement bricks are relatively more expensive compared to white bricks, but are also more robust and watertight.
4 . Concrete walls
Concrete which is often used for home walls is pre – cast concrete, available in the form of ready to install like a brick. Pre – cast concrete is easy and fast to install. The surface is smooth and neat so it does not need to be plastered.
In addition to the wall materials above, there are many types of wall materials that are semi- permanent and are often used for partition walls, including:
1 . Fiber cement board
Fiber cement board is made of a mixture of fiberglass and fiber cement sheets printed in the form of board. Fiber cement board is lightweight, easily removed, cut, and glued. In contrast to the red brick and cement brick, fiber cement board is not installed with mortar but nailed and screwed, thus very practical and quick. Moreover, the walls made with fiber cement board can be painted directly without need to be plastered first.
2 . Gypsum board
The basic material of a gypsum board is lime. Gypsum board is available in sheet form with a size of 120 × 240cm and thickness of 9, 10, 12, and 15 mm. In order to stand as a wall, the gypsum board is attached to wood frame or metal-based frame partition and mild steel. Gypsum wall board surface is smooth and flat so that it can directly be finished with paint or wallpaper.
3 . Composite panel
Composite panels are made of several layers of plastic on the core and aluminum coating on the exterior. The wall material is flexible so it can be shaped curved or rectangle without resulting any cracks.
4 . Bamboo
Woven bamboo wall is often used to create a traditional impression within a house. The type of bamboo often used for the wall material is black bamboo. Although inexpensive, easy to install, and has its own aesthetic values, keep in mind that bamboo wall is flammable and prone to pest.
